Choosing a size

An urli under 8 inches works as a side-table or shelf accent with a few floating petals; 9 to 11 inches is the range that reads as a proper centrepiece on a console or centre table and holds enough water for a real floral arrangement rather than a token one. For an entrance foyer specifically, err larger — it's meant to be seen from a distance, not examined up close.

Water, dry-fill, or both

Most people use an urli with water most of the year and switch to a dry fill — potpourri, dried flowers, decorative stones — during drier months or when daily upkeep isn't realistic. Both are legitimate uses; the bowl doesn't need to hold water constantly to earn its place on the table.
